Stuffed grape leaves with sour cherries , A unique Istanbul delicacy!


500 gr. grape leaves,
2 onions chopped,
1 cup of virgin olive oil,
1 cup of sour cherries,
2 cups of rice,
A handful of pine nuts (50 gr),
A handful of black currants (80 gr),
1 tbsp coconut sugar,
2 tsp sea salt,
2 tsp cinnamon,
2 tsp allspice,
Half a cup of finely chopped fresh mint,
Juice of 1 lemon,
4 cups of boiled water.


1. Place half cup of olive oil, chopped onions and pine nuts into a pan, keep it on medium heat. Stir periodically until it is fried.

2. Add the rice, sugar, salt, allspice, fresh mint, lemon juice, black currants, cinnamon and 1cup boiled water. Cook them on medium heat for 5-6 minutes. It should be semi-raw.

3. If your leaves is in brine, soak them into warm and unsalted water for 5 minutes to remove salt.
 is fresh, then  boil them in a 1 lt of salter water for 5 minutes. Dry and cut leaf stalks. Ready for filling!

4. Pit cherries with the help of a knife or seeder. If you have frozen cherries, then just divide into two.

5. Fill with rice and two pieces of cherries and roll them. Place rolls into the cooking pot and spread sour cherries onto the rolls. Pour the remaining olive oil into the pot. Add 2 cups of water and place heat-proof flat porcelain onto the rolls to keep them steady. Cook them on medium heat till they absorb all water. Remove from the heat and wait for 15-20 minutes after  place the plate carefully. You can garnish them with sour cherries or lime.
